Maggie was born November 5, 1910, in McDavid, Florida. She spent much of her early childhood in Mobile, Alabama. Her family moved to Texas with the logging operations where she met and married, Fred H. Sheffield, Roganville, Texas. They had one child, Marcelle.
Maggie had a love for flowers and there were always some growing at their home. In 1952, she ordered her first 50 daylily seedlings for $2.50, from an ad placed in the Louisiana Weekly Market Bulletin by a Mrs. Gray in Minden, Louisiana. Maggie loved those so much that she bought named varieties from such growers as Wild and Simon. Maggie hybridized those to get better varieties.
She and her husband operated the Sheffield Gardens in the late 1950s.
Maggie was generous with her plants and advice to anyone interested in growing or propagating the Hemerocallis.
Maggie was a long-time member of the Gulf Coast Daylily Society. The club developed a Maggie Sheffield Memorial Bed in her honor.
In 1981, Lucille Williamson registered Hemerocallis 'Little Maggie' in honor of Maggie.
