1995 American Hemerocallis Society
Regional Service Award Winner
Mable Nelson

The contributions of Mable Nelson are not limited by boundaries. She is a supporter of National causes and a particular sponsor of the Gulf Coast Daylily Society where she has cheerfully assumed the role of hands-on worker at the grass-roots level. She has served on all committees and acted as club president, Flower Show Chair, and yearly Activities Chair.

Many American Hemerocallis Society members outside Region 6 are familiar with the "Texas" bus. It shows up regularly at American Hemerocallis Society National Conventions where it is usually pressed into service as an extra garden-tour bus. Joyce Lewis remembers, "Lula Mae Purnell organized the first Region 6 charter bus to the Nationals during the mid-1960s and ‘Captained’ them until her retirement. Clarice Foster then carried on this activity for several years. Since those memorable years, the Gulf Coast Society Charters have become known as the ‘Texas’ bus, not only at the National conventions but on annual club tours to gardens in surrounding states as well as within Region 6. Of course, Gulf Coast members have priority, but as room permits they welcome any Region 6 members to accompany them. Mable was always the ‘captain’ who mainly organized the tour and kept things running smoothly along the way."

Photography was another area in which Mable, as a successful entrant of the American Hemerocallis Society contests, publicized Region 6 and contributed to the American Hemerocallis Society slide library at the same time.

Not the least of her contributions to the Region was Mable’s term as RVP and Region 6 Newsletter Editor. She has also served for many years as a Garden Judge and an Exhibitions Judge. Her programs and lectures to various garden clubs help educate growers on the subject of modern daylilies.

Mixing work with fun, Mable Nelson has been a Pied Piper for Region 6 and the Gulf Coast Hemerocallis Society.
