Carl William Sauer was born May 2, 1907, in Houston, Texas, the son of Friedrich John Sauer and Elise (Wottrich) Sauer. Both parents were born in Germany. He was a semi-retired commercial artist who was well-known for his daylily hybridizing. His most famous hybrid being Hemerocallis 'Viv' (1971), which was named for his wife, Vivian. H. 'Viv' won the President's Cup at the 1977 American Hemerocallis Society National Convention in Dallas. Carl and Vivian Annabelle Taylor were married October 1, 1929, and were married 52 years at the time of his death from a heart attack on February 14, 1982. Carl was a life-long resident of Houston. Mildred Schlumpf knew him in high school where they both graduated in the same class in 1924. They lost touch, but later were brought together through their mutual love of daylilies. Carl was a member of the Houston Hemerocallis Society and the Houston Area Daylily Society. He grew daylilies exceptionally well and was always generous in his contribution of plants to both clubs for their annual plant sales. He served as 1960-61 President of Houston Hemerocallis Society. He served as both an American Hemerocallis Society Awards and Honors & an Exhibition Judge. Carl wrote numerous articles for the Region 6 Newsletter. |
