July 18, 1992, American Hemerocallis Society Region 6 Director, Betty Roberts of Albuquerque met with interested persons to discuss the formation of a Daylily Society in Santa Fe. The meeting was held at the home of Frank and Marylou Pearson, who had attended the recent National Convention.

Santa Fe and Los Alamos daylily growers eagerly selected daylilies donated by Ned and Betty Roberts so that a fund could be started for the anticipated Santa Fe Society. Betty spoke about the American Hemerocallis Society, the benefits of the national organization, and the Hemerocallis Check Lists that detail the more than 35,000 registered daylilies. Also exhibited were the publications of the American Hemerocallis Society, the catalogs of many fine growers, and commercial sources for daylilies within the U.S.

Betty explained the various kinds of groups and societies in the American Hemerocallis Society. Upon motion, unanimously voted, the Santa Fe Daylily Society became the name of the new society. A Planning Committee with Mary Lou Pearson as Chair, Gene Loring, Margaret R. Johnson, John Michael Gonzales, and Frank Pearson (treasurer) was named. It was voted that Charter members would be accepted through the month of December 1992. A Nominating Committee with Ann Brennand, Chair, Robert Daugherty, John Michael Gonzales, Mary Lou Pearson, and Margaret R. Johnson was appointed. A joint meeting with the Albuquerque Daylily Society was set for August 22 at the home of the Pearsons.

Johnette Ward, who joined the American Hemerocallis Society in 1961, was a founding member of the Santa Fe Daylily Society. She knew Orville Fay and many of the older hybridizers.
