Admiral Dewey Roquemore was born February 26,
1905, in Palo Pinto County, Texas. He was one of seven children. He was called
"Dewey." His parents were Thomas Peter "Pete" Roquemore and
Ida Belle (Parks) Roquemore.
"Admiral" was his given first name. It does not indicate a rank, as he was not an admiral. It can be assumed that Dewey Roquemore received the name that he did because of the fame of Admiral George Dewey. In 1903, two years before A. D. Roquemore was born, an act of Congress had made Admiral George Dewey a rank still higher than Admiral (five stars), the highest there had ever been. He became "Admiral of the Navy" with six stars, the only person ever to have that rank.
Dewey Roquemore died on October 12, 1971, after a long illness. His death certificate listed his occupation as Trucker.
Avilda and Dewey Roquemore had a very beautiful garden in Dallas, visited by many members of Region 6. Dewey seemed to have a magic touch with growing things and his assistance to his wife, Avilda, made their daylily plantings one of the most attractive and well grown gardens in Dallas.
Dewey was always ready to assist in any project the daylily club planned.
The A. D. Roquemore Memorial Award, established by Mrs. Arthur L. "Nellie Jo" Trott (a good friend of Avilda), was presented annually by the American Hemerocallis Society for the best slide of a daylily clump from 1975 through 2010. The award was a pewter plate. The award was replaced with the Multi-Bloom Image Award in 2011.
