In The Beginning
by Nell Shimek
Cary Sheffield, Paula Payne, and Nell Shimek formed a committee to search for a place where we could meet at no charge and was large enough to accommodate 25-40 people. We had several planning meetings at Paula’s house to set up by-laws. At those meetings, we were joined by Ruth and Warren Goza, Liz and Charlotte Howard, and Beverly Winkelman. We compared the by-laws of other clubs in the area until we decided which ones we wanted for our guidelines.
We ended up meeting in the Texas Room at the Alvin Community College for our first Lone Star Daylily Society meeting, January 21, 1996. We had advertised in the local papers, through other local daylily clubs, garden clubs, and we put up flyers. We never dreamed we would have such a large turnout. Sixty five daylily enthusiasts showed up. Sixty four joined the Lone Star Daylily Society. That was for a daylily meeting in the middle of January! Thirty two people new to daylilies joined us. The cities represented were: Alvin, Baytown, Brazoria, Crosby, Friendswood, Hitchcock, Houston, Iowa Colony, Manvel, Missouri City, Pearland, Rosenberg, Rosharon, Santa Fe, Stafford, Sugarland, and Texas City.
We held our first Accredited Daylily Flower Show and Plant Sale on May 10, 1997, at Baybrook Mall in Friendswood.
We met at the College several times until a permanent home was found. We now meet at the Alvin Senior Citizen’s Building on the third Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. We currently have a strong membership of 68.
We are keeping with our tradition of having our spring Flower Show and Plant Sale, a Fall Plant Sale, members’ garden tours in June, an annual auction in October, and our annual Christmas Party.
