Gertrude (McClure) Lanham was born February 12, 1907, in Haskell County, Texas, the daughter of Arthur C. McClure and Ida Gertrude (Robertson) McClure.
She attended public school in Big Springs, Texas. She studied at Montezuma Academy and College in Las Vegas, New Mexico, receiving her B.A. degree from Hardin Simmons in Abilene, Texas.
Gertrude came to Dallas with her husband and their three children in 1930. She taught at Pleasant Grove High School and at Highland Park Junior High for a total of seventeen years, retiring in 1970.
Gertrude's interest in daylilies began about 1961, when she decided she was tired of dividing chrysanthemums and daisies so often.
In 1970 Gertrude served as Chair of the Daylily Growers of Dallas Fluorescent Unit. In 1972 and 1986, she served as President of the Daylily Growers of Dallas. She served as 1976-77 Region 6 RPD. In 1978 she served as Chair of the Daylily Growers of Dallas - Big Dee Unit.
Gertrude served as Chair for the 1975 Region 6 Meeting hosted by the Hemerocallis Growers of Dallas. She also served as Chair for the 1977 American Hemerocallis Society Convention in Dallas.
Her sister, Natalie Thompson, registered Hemerocallis 'Gertrude Lanham' (1977) in her honor.
