The Big Country Daylily Society was formally organized in Abilene, Texas, in the home of Mrs. Clyde Daniel on the evening of June 19, 1967 with a membership of 15. The following officers were elected: Mrs. Clyde Daniel, President; Mrs. Opal Maxwell, Vice-President; Mrs. Fred Newman, Secretary-Treasurer; and Mrs. Shy Osborn, Program Chair. Miss Velma Wooldridge acted as Publicity Chair and Mrs. Gaines Short, assisted by Mrs. C. W. Presswood, were Pilgrimage Committee Co-Chairs.
"Big Country" was the descriptive name that Abilene and surrounding area has adopted.
In October 1976, the club began a project to have a daylily bed at Abilene Christian University. The bed was to be maintained and sponsored by the Abilene Christian University Women’s Club, along with the Big Country Daylily Society.
