The Robert Way Schlumpf Award was established in 1969 by Mildred Schlumpf in honor of her late husband, and was presented annually for the best photo, digital image, or slide in each of two categories, single bloom and landscape. Mildred wished to stimulate interest in good photography and to build up the ADS Slide Library. The awards, two engraved silver trays, were first paid for and presented to the winners by Mildred beginning in 1970. These awards were renamed in honor of Mildred as the Mildred Schlumpf Awards after her death in 1992. That year, the Houston Area Daylily Society began sponsoring the awards in Mildred's honor, with the club providing the engraved silver trays for the award winners until they ran out of trays in 2013. The silver trays were replaced with wooden plaques with the with the winning photos attached. Mary Gage had her son-in-law make the plaques. (see photos of the 2013 plaques below)
In 2016, the AHS Board approved a motion to move the award sponsorship from Region 6 to AHS and the awards are now certificates. Here is the motion from 2016: "Move that the AHS Board of Directors change the sponsorship of the Mildred Schlumpf photo awards from Region 6 to the AHS, starting in 2017. The winning photographs (single bloom and landscape) will receive certificates at the National Convention. The change in sponsorship has been approved by Region 6."
