It
was announced at the National Convention in Birmingham in June that Mildred
Schlumpf of Houston was the 1983 winner of the American Hemerocallis Society's
highest honor, the Helen Field Fischer Gold Medal Award. This award is given in
recognition for distinguished and meritorious service rendered the Society by a
member.
The Helen Field Fischer Award was first given in 1950.
Mildred served on the American Hemerocallis Society National Board for six years as the Slide Custodian. In 1970, she established the Robert Way Schlumpf Award in memory of her late husband, who was a fine photographer. She gives two silver trays each year to the winners of the best slide for an individual daylily bloom and the best slide for a landscape featuring daylilies. All entries become the property of the National Slide Library. The slide of the individual bloom must be of a cultivar registered within the last six years, and in this way the slide library is updated with slides of the newer daylilies.
