Edythe Carcle Houston was born May 11, 1896, in Virginia, the daughter of Lenney Houston and Dora (Roper) Houston.

Edythe married Frank Darlington Arthur, and her name was usually listed as Mrs. F. D. Arthur.

Edythe was a member of the Houston Hemerocallis Society. She was well known as a soil conservationist and organic gardener, being a charter member of the Houston Organic Garden Club, and was well known as a garden club, radio, and TV speaker.

She was one of the early Awards and Honors Judges, as well as Exhibition Judge of the American Hemerocallis Society.

Edythe was instrumental in the formation of five Region 6 Societies - Wichita Falls Daylily Society, organized September 24, 1953; Houston Hemerocallis Society and Corpus Christi Daylily Society both organized in the Fall of 1953; Gulf Coast Daylily Society, organized 1956; and Dallas Hemerocallis Society organized January 1957.

She was appointed as 1955-57 American Hemerocallis Society Regional Supervisor for Region 6.

Edythe died March 11, 1981, in Kerrville, Texas, at the age of 84.
